This week has been full of delicious food, exciting adventures, and memorable events.

I’m not going to let my lack of modern-day journaling prevent this week from being known. Much of what I mention now will hopefully be put into a more detailed post of its own, but in the meantime, sit back, relax and enjoy my week in review.

Last Saturday

P5216913

I had such a good day last Saturday. Sebastian and I drove to my new favorite German museum, Kommern Open-Air Museum. I was going to bring my class to the museum on Thursday for a trip and wanted to be a bit more knowledgeable before leading a tour.

P5216893

The museum has collected and repaired traditional buildings from the Rheinland and placed then into four communities. Visiting the museum is like traveling back in time.

P5216852

We enjoyed walking through the buildings and imagining what it must have been like to live in the Rheinland region 500 years ago.

P5216789

Old-fashioned rhubarb custard crumble cake

After visiting the museum, Sebastian and I did a bit of shopping then went to see two short plays.

The Bonn Players, the theatre group I’ve acted with in the past, was showing their spring productions. Both plays were very well done and really enjoyable to watch. After the play, Sebastian and I ate an extremely late Italian dinner at a local restaurant then called it a night.

Sunday

Lazy day at home. Probably the most interesting thing I did was ate a great soup and salad lunch.

P5226929

Chickpea vegetable soup, mixed salad and bruschetta.

Monday

I’ve told you about.

Tuesday

At school the kids performed their musical for Year 2 and a few parents who weren’t able to come on Wednesday. Other than that, it was a normal school day.

Once home, Sebastian and I made a very traditional German spring dinner.

P5246956

Boiled new potatoes, fish, white asparagus and hollandaise sauce.

Wednesday

My students performed their Pied Piper musical for their parents. There were several teary eyes in the audience and many appreciative greetings at the end. I am so proud of the kids as well. They really put everything they had into this show.

Thursday

The class trip to Kommern was a huge success.

P5267017

The kids were fascinated by “the olden days.” As opposed to Saturday when Sebastian and I went, on Thursday, the town was ‘working.’

P5267070

The bakery was baking bread, the blacksmith was making horseshoes, the housewives were cooking and gardening.

Probably the most memorable part of the day was meeting a woman who described what life would have been like 200 years ago. She had everyone captivated by her tales of childhood and hard manual labor.

P5267054

I was absolutely exhausted after the trip and was so happy when I got home to find that Sebastian had prepared pizza dough for dinner.

P5267105

We ran to the grocery store and strawberry stand before beginning to bake our pizzas. I made a fennel and red onion pizza with black olives and a balsamic glaze.

P5267115

Absolutely divine.

P5267101

Sebastian went down the spicy road and made a salami and jalapeño pizza.

P5267130

I also whipped together a very quick rhubarb tiramisu using a recipe from my vegetable box.

Needless to say, Thursday night I slept like a baby.

Friday

Last day of the week before a week off of work (sort of.)

School went well, one of the mums came in for Mystery Reader and finished reading The School Mouse. I have loved listening to this particular mum read this book. She reads with the most soothing and beautiful British accent your could imagine. I’m just sad that the story is over. I always feel a bit down the few lonely days after finishing a good book.

P5277170

After school, I came home and made birthday cupcakes for my friend and classroom assistant, Prachi. I had planned on bringing the tiramisu but realized that I’d be carrying around a heavy glass dish all night and decided to go the dish-free direction.

P5277180

Vegan Chocolate Amaretto Cupcakes, I promise a recipe soon!

Because of my baking, we were running so late that we decided to take the car after all. I guess carrying a glass dish wouldn’t have been a problem. We ate at a Mexican restaurant in Bonn called Tacos. I had delicious vegetarian fajitas and a margarita. We ended up staying at the restaurant all night, laughing, talking and simply having a relaxing night out.

Saturday

I didn’t sleep well Friday night because I was too nervous about Saturday morning. My friends Jan and Matt are in a band and invited me to sing a couple of songs at an upcoming gig.

Saturday was my first rehearsal with the band and to say that I was nervous really is an understatement. Only Matt has ever heard me sing so I was really afraid that the rest of the band would be unimpressed and question his judgment. Luckily, all went well and I had a really good time with the band. Our next rehearsal is on Thursday then the gig is on Friday.

Once rehearsal was finished, Sebastian and I went to IKEA then over to Jan and Zoe’s to help them move into their new apartment. They are only moving next door, but the new flat is about 3x larger than the old one. Doctored up frozen pizzas and beers were shared on the new balcony then we relaxed and chatted while listening to music late into the night.

Sunday

Beside cooking a really fun breakfast and dinner, today has been a total write-off.

P5297215

I slept in, made breakfast, fell asleep while reading, woke up again, watched three documentaries, talked on the phone with my friend, made dinner, then started blogging. A very unproductive day.

P5297227

I have this coming week off of school but will be going in to work most of the days to work on writing reports. Although I hate that I’m spending a “vacation week” writing reports, I’m glad that I have the time to focus on the reports while the classroom is all mine.

Alright, thanks for sticking with me through this long post, I promise to provide a few of the recipes on their own as well as a dedicated post to Kommern Open-air Museum.

I hope all of you have had a great week and a relaxing weekend.

It’s a Wrap

PB301586

Looking for another use for my Vegan Walnut and Mushroom Pate?

It makes a great spread in wraps.

For lunch last week, I spread the pate on two nori sheets and wrapped up fresh arugula, red pepper slices, julienned carrots, avocado wedges and sliced tomatoes.

Delicious!

Today has been one of those busy days. I feel like everything involving food has happened in 5 minutes- flat.

Starting with my first rushed meal of the day.

Breakfast

Rye English Muffin-like roll, 1 whole egg, goat’s cheese, Italian seasoning, strawberries & raspberries.

While making breakfast, I realized I had nothing for lunch. Hmm… I have a bunch of vegetables, cheese, and whole grain tortillas. A wrap it is! Heck, while I’ve got everything out, I’ll make two. One for me and one for my hard-working boyfriend. Lunch was packed up in 5 minutes-flat.

Lunch

1 whole grain tortilla shell, cream cheese for sticking power, lettuce, radishes, shredded carrot, cheddar cheese and raisins. 1 pear.

Not only was lunch made in 5 minutes-flat, it was also consumed in the same fashion between sending the kids out to play and heading to rehearsal for our “teachers’ band.” I joined the group just for fun but it has turned into the performing type of band. From garage band to stadium. Well not quite. From basement to Wednesday’s assembly. I hope I don’t embarrass the other band members with my singing!

After-school Snack

I hurried home from work only to realize that I’d forgotten my cell phone in my PE bag. So, I quickly packed my gym bag, made a toasted peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and rushed out the door heading back to where I’d just come from. It took me less than 5 minutes to quickly snarf the sandwich down.

At the gym I did Body Pump again. I was feeling really good today. Full of energy, lunging like there was no tomorrow! The class was great and since it ended right when my favorite German tv show began, I hopped on the treadmill. Flipping my personal treadmill tv on, I walked hills for 45 minutes while watching a 20 year old au pair cook a Turkish inspired appetizer and main dish for her 4 guests. I must recreate her dessert on a hot summer day, margarita sorbet. Yummy!

Watching people cook and eat while you’re at the gym is one way to build up an appetite. I was hungry, dinner had to be fast. Luckily I was able to whip it together in 5 minutes-flat.

Dinner

5 Minute Tuna salad salad.

Lettuce, 1/2 tomato, 1 shredded carrot, 2 radishes, tuna salad (tuna mixed with mayo and Italian seasoning,) and 2 slices of pumpkin seed whole-grain bread- misted with olive oil and toasted on the stove. Sprinkle everything with Italian seasoning.

“What with all my body-building lately, I thought I could use a little more protein in my diet.” (I hope you could all tell I wanted that to be read in an Arnold Schwarzenegger voice.)

I didn’t post yesterday but wanted to share a beautiful photo of my after-school snack.

Plain yogurt, strawberries, raspberries, granola.

Question to all readers who are foreign residents of Germany- have you donated blood here? I’d like to donate at a drive next Monday but I can’t find any information saying that I’d be allowed as a foreigner. Any personal experience?

A day of cooking done in the quick, hurry method means that I have a hue pile of dirty dishes to attend to.

Unfortunately, this is one task that will take more than 5 minutes-flat.

The highlight of today- taking a walk through Bonn’s local history.

Within walking distance from school is a historical little village, riddles with history. My parallel teacher and I took our classes on a walk to this village today as part of our Comparative History unit. We are studying and comparing Ancient Roman times, 500-600 years ago (when this village was built,) and modern times.

It is wonderful living and teaching in a place where history is literally right at my feet.

Before I share some photos from this wonderful walk, let’s talk about food.

Breakfast

Strawberry and blueberry granola with milk and coffee. Please take the time to notice how my mug matches my food. Color coordination in action.

Morning Snack

Strawberries. I ate 4.

Lunch

I had the company of two lovely little girls for a lunch-time picnic. Amazing that our sticker chart reward menu has about 40 other rewards like computer time, extra play time, free homework assignment, and the likes yet lunch with me remains the most popular choice. I like it too! Sebastian shudders at the thought of kids wanting to spend lunch with the teacher. He grew up in a very different school system!

Flatbread with cream cheese, roasted red pepper and veggie spread, lettuce, shredded carrot, mushrooms, tomato, and avocado. Yummy!!!

As I put this bad boy together, one of the girls asked, “How are you going to get that huge thing in your mouth?” Have no fear, I am a pro at stuffing my face with 6 inches of layered veggie goodness.

After School Snack

1 camera shy apple and pizza bread

Dinner

Warm, comforting, delicious and home scenting Red Curry Coconut Soup

Red Curry Coconut Soup

  • 1 can coconut milk
  • 1 can water
  • 8 shrimp
  • 12 cherry tomatoes, quartered
  • 1 cup mushrooms, quartered
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 15 g. Lemon grass (I couldn’t find so left it out)
  • 1 Tbsp. Lemon juice
  • 1 Tbsp. Honey
  • 1 Tbsp. Soy sauce
  • 1 cube vegetable bouillon
  • 1 tsp. Ginger powder (I also added about 1 inch of sliced fresh ginger root)
  • 1 heaping tsp. Red curry paste
  • 1 Tbsp. Canola oil
  1. Heat the oil in a large sauce pan. Add the onions, mushrooms, and shrimp. Cook for a couple minutes. Add the coconut milk.
  2. Put the bouillon cube in the now empty can, add water, stir to dissolve then add to the pot. Also stir in the lemon grass, curry paste, lemon juice, honey, soy sauce, and ginger. Bring to a boil.
  3. Add the tomatoes and reduce heat to medium- cook for 5 minutes.
  4. Enjoy!

After Dinner Drink

Green tea with fresh ginger and a drizzle of agave. I feel a cold coming on, let’s hope the ginger helps!

On to Muffendorf!

Since we are currently studying houses for our 3 time period comparison, our focus was mainly on the timber-framed houses in this village.

This one is actually a small pony stable.

This is one of the oldest churches in Germany.

The first school in this village was in the church courtyard, as was the teacher’s home.

I wish my school provided a sweet place like this!

This house was built in 1657. Keep in mind the USA hadn’t declared independence until 1776. This exact building was standing 119 years before we even had a country. Amazing, huh?

Want even more history? This is a dedication plaque which was  uncovered when the church shown above was constructed. The Ancient Romans had a temple to the Goddess Diana in the exact same location built between 55-9 BC.

That will do it for today’s history lesson! I’m off to bed!

Question: Are you a history buff?

I love history but am terrible at keeping dates and related events in my head. I was really lucky today as my parallel teacher has lived in this village for over 30 years and is an expert on the history. Today I was able to follow along and take it all in!
