About 98.7% of my vacation expenses went towards food.
Although I don’t have the photos to prove it, I regret nothing.
The food in Vienna was great.
By far, the best eating experience was had at the most unlikely of places, a Pakistani pay as you wish all you can eat restaurant.
Der Wiener Deewan
I could go on and on about this place. I found it through unlike.net, the travel website I told you about here. It was the first place we ate and probably my favorite.
Any place that provides delicious, flavorful, vegetarian food and trusts the customers to pay appropriately is awesome in my books.
Der Wiener Deewan changes its buffet menu each day. It always has 2 meat dishes, 3 vegetarian dishes, rice, salad and dessert.
The restaurant serves each table with a pitcher of water~ free water is unheard of in Europe.
Even at 2pm, the restaurant was packed full with students, young and old couples, and even families. The atmosphere was simple and buzzing with a happy vibe.
Sebastian and I ate ourselves full, relaxed for a while then paid what we felt was a fair cost for the service and food.
How cool is that?
Almost every afternoon we stopped for coffee and something sweet. One day we had the obligatory apple strudel and coffee.
Another day, we stopped in the McCafe. (Does McDonalds have cafes in the US yet?) Being the McDonalds phobic that I am, I still had to try their macaroons. I thought the name was too funny- McCaroons. I had a lemon and raspberry macaroon.
Every day we ate a rather late and large breakfast so were not too hungry for lunch. One day I bought a tofu and spinach takeaway from the appetizer menu at Akakito just to hold me over until dinner.
One activity I would highly recommend is to buy cake and coffee for take-away, find a sunny spot and eat with a view.
Sebastian and I went to the top of the Albertina and enjoyed our afternoon delights while soaking up the sunshine and watching people pass by.
He had another apfelstrudel and I went for a strawberry sponge cake.
We relaxed like cats in the sunshine before moving along.
Another activity I would recommend is to visit one of the markets in Vienna. We really enjoyed wandering around the Naschmarkt.
This market will hold a special place in my heart, for it is where I finally found smoked paprika.
Although there were several pavilions we wanted to eat at, we only had time for one. Oh well, I guess we’ll just have to come back to Vienna again!
