Hello all you beautiful people, we’ve nearly made it to the weekend!

Today was another good, yet busy day. I don’t think I could honestly say that I’ve ever had a day at work that hasn’t been busy. There are just so many things to fit into one day. Let me walk you through my Thursday.

Breakfast

My regular bowl of oats, topped with coconut flakes, flax and hemp, pumpkin seeds, and almond butter.

My school day started with spelling tests then library. I love library- talking about books, kids sharing suggestions with friends on what to read, the look of excitement as they hold a freshly checked-out book that is theirs for a week.

On Thursdays, my students are split up into either kids going into the German system for secondary school and kids who are not. Then they have either German or English math. And I have a prep period. This week I worked on marking and organizing for after our Easter holiday. Time well spent.

During morning break, I planned on eating some trail mix… but while wheeling myself into better sunlight to take a photo, I accidentally dropped the container and my snack ended up on the rug by my classroom door.

Even on a dirty mat, it still looks good!

The morning continued with Literacy- my favorite subject. I just love how I’ve organized the literacy hour in my classroom. If anyone is interested, I’ve adapted the ideas in The Daily Five to fit my school’s schedule. My students are so much more independent and excited about literacy now. On Mondays, they rush to the board to see what the literacy activities will be for that week. I just love it! I’m really looking forward to next week…

Lunch

Red leaf lettuce, mushrooms, red pepper, cucumber, tofu chicken patty and balsamic glaze.

This afternoon we had social studies. The children are learning how timber-framed houses were built. We are also doing a pretty cool watercolor art project using photos I took of the timber-framed houses near our school.

After social studies, we had fruit snack then design and technology. This term, it’s all about bags and containers. Right now we’re making reusable bags out of old t-shirts. I found the idea here.

After school, I had Year 5 art. The kindergarten has painted the windows of one of our school’s hallways. My art class then added onto the kindergarten’s work by creating scenes using laminated photos of the kindergarten kids doing a variety of activities. My students were told to “tell the story by completing the picture.” They did a pretty good job!

After school snack

By the time I was home, I was starving. During the commercial break of my German cooking show, I whipped up some grownup grilled cheese and tomato soup.

Doctored-up dry tomato soup mix topped with garden cress

Whole wheat bread with olive oil spread, aged white cheddar and gouda cheese, fresh tomato slices, garden cress, oregano, and love. Yum. Yum. Yum.

I was a bit disappointed when I got home from work and found Sebastian sick in bed. He’s worked like a dog since Saturday, not getting home until 12:30 each night. Because of his crazy work schedule which is the opposite of mine, I literally have not talked face to face with him since Sunday. I was really looking forward to spending time with him tonight on his night off. Sickness sucks. I just have to remind myself not to be selfish… he is sick, I shouldn’t feel bad for myself. So, the healthy comfort food dinner hopefully will send him back down the path to health.

Yesterday, Rose over at onalobsterplacemat featured me in her Worker Bee series. If you have the time, check it out to learn even more about my exciting life as an elementary school teacher in Germany!

Now for the most important part of the post… it’s my mother’s birthday!!

My beautiful mother, our family friend, Elaine, and my youngest brother Christopher in Prague last summer during their grand European adventure.

Happy Birthday, Mom!!

Aunt Bev and my mom

Mom, I wish I could give you a hug and spend this day with you, but please know that you’ve been on my mind and in my heart. You are the best mother a girl could ask for and every day I thank God that I was born to you. I love you and miss you more than you can imagine. I hope this birthday is a special one! I’ll see you in almost 2 weeks and we can celebrate then! Oh, and my class wishes you a happy birthday too! I love you so much!

All of you near your mothers today, give them a hug please!

Have a wonderful Friday everyone!
